April News Bulletin

Welcome to the new u3a year 2024 – 2025 when we hope to continue to learn laugh and live.  In order to do this, we need people to step up and volunteer to help on the committee, otherwise our u3a will cease to exist after the AGM

The committee meets 10 times a year for about a couple of hours each time. Why not give it a try and join the committee for a year in the first instance? The tasks of the committee can be rearranged to fit with members’ particular interests and skills. The key thing is that we work as a team, helping each other.

We already have a business secretary, a webmaster and a volunteer coordinator. We have nominations for chair, vice-chair and a general committee member. The maximum number of people on the committee is 10 so other nominations for general committee members are welcome.  The one role we do need in order to be able to continue under the terms of our constitution is a treasurer.   John has kindly agreed to remain as Treasurer until he can carry out a proper hand-over to the new incumbent.  Other committee roles that fall vacant at the AGM are Membership Secretary and Group Leader Liaison Officer.  Either or both of these roles could be fulfilled as a job share.  This has been done successfully in other u3as.

General Meeting: pre AGM : 10am Monday 8th April : Buxton Methodist Church

This is a chance for the membership to discuss issues relating to the AGM.  It will take the form of groups of members sitting at tables for around 8 to 10 people.  After an introduction by the acting chair, there will be opportunities to ask questions and address the meeting. Refreshments will be provided.

Coffee & Chat: 10:30am Friday 12th April: Pavilion Gardens Tea Rooms

This opportunity to have a chat with others and to welcome the public to join us to find out more about our u3a has been going from strength to strength.  March’s get-together was particularly well-attended.

AGM: 10am Monday 13th May: Buxton Methodist Church Hall

The results of the mainly on-line voting process will be announced.  Voting papers are due to be with you (whether by email or post) a few days after 10th April and should be returned by the 29th April

A concert by Take Two (i.e. Janette and Colin Sykes) will follow the AGM

Groups news

One of our newest groups, Playing the Piano, had its first meeting this week. Although on our list of groups, Cycling has not yet met, but no doubt the fine Buxton weather will encourage lots to get “on your bike”. Details of both those groups are to be found, alongside the other 48 groups we have, on the website.

As of 1 April, we are now in a new u3a year, 2024-2025, so please make life easy for your Group Leaders by taking along your new membership details (either as a card or electronically) to show them at your first meeting of the new session. This makes their role easier and remember that you need to be a member to be covered by u3a insurance. At £47 for an annual subscription, allowing attendance at as many groups as you choose, that has to be the best value for money available

Note to Group Leaders

Please remember, if you have not already done so, to send in your risk assessments and completed registers for October 2023 to March 2024 to the Group Leader Liaison (Details on the website). Please also check membership cards are current for 2024-5 to ensure your own protection and that of all group members under the terms of the u3a insurance cover. Thanks to all Group Leaders for your sterling work on behalf of all members

Volunteers needed for the Rotary Fair in June

Finally, we have booked 2 tables for the annual Rotary Fair on 1st June.  Volunteers to help with manning the stand and with assembly and disassembly of the display will be very welcome.  Further details to follow
