February 2024 News Bulletin

Welcome to February’s edition of The Bulletin. There’s a lot going on this month. Wrap up warm and join in.

Members will be aware that Frank Barrett, a driving force in founding our u3a, whose contribution was marked by the awarding of the unique title Life-long President, died in December 2023.

A MEMORIES BOOK will be available at the General Meetings to be held on Monday 12 February and Monday 11 March. Members are invited to share their u3a stories of Frank, many of which will doubtless be amusing, in that book. The book will then be given to Judy, Frank’s widow, who was also a founder member. The Memories Book will be held by Anne Rogerson, so if you are unable to be at either of those meetings and wish to add an anecdote, please contact Anne before Friday 8 March so that your contribution can be made.

If you know members who will not receive this Bulletin, please do pass on this information. Or you may contact Anne Rogerson on 01298 26720

Monday 12th February                       General Meeting

There is no speaker for February’s General Meeting. Instead, we are holding a general get together where we can all learn from each other about what our u3a has on offer. A day where we can celebrate all the wonderful things our u3a does.

Come along, have a cuppa and a slice and cake and find out more about our u3a.

Monday 11th March          Cyber crime : What is it and how can we prevent it?

Samantha Hancock from the Cyber Crime Unit of Derbyshire Police will tell us what we need to know about how to keep safe online.

Don’t forget that we run a jigsaw exchange at the monthly General Meetings. We have lots of jigsaws for you to choose from, ranging in size from 500 to 3000 pieces.

If you would like to try a jigsaw but don’t have one to swap, no problems, we have lots in stock. Borrow one and try it out.

The Annual General Meeting will take place on Monday 13th May.

It will be held in the Methodist Church Hall and will begin at 10:00am

You will shortly be receiving your first documents about the AGM, telling you what the timescales and deadlines are and asking you to submit any resolutions you may have.

Please note that the following vacancies will be advertised

  • Chair
  • Vice Chair
  • Membership Secretary
  • Events co-ordinator
  • Group Leader Liaison
  • Press and Publicity
  • Minutes Secretary

It is vitally important that these significant roles are filled. If they are not filled, the Buxton and District u3a faces very real threats to its existence. It is absolutely crucial that we at least fill the chair and vice chair roles. We are not allowed to function as an organisation without them. Please think very seriously about contributing. Our u3a needs you.

The February outing to Dunham Massey to see the snowdrops and winter gardens and the March outing to The Museum of Glass in St Helens are both fully booked and have waiting lists.

Many thanks to everyone for supporting these Charabanc Outings. Your response has been fabulous.

April’s Charabanc outing will be to Newark. More details to follow…there’s lots to see and do in Newark.

A huge ‘Thank you’ to Marge Rose for her outstanding work building us a new website. We now have a website to be proud of; it’s comprehensive, modern and easy to navigate.

Marge will tell you there’s a lot still to be done. We say, “It’s amazing, you’ve done a great job.”

If you haven’t done so yet, check it out at buxton.u3asite.uk   It’s great. Honest.

The next Coffee and Chat meeting is on Friday 9th February from 10:30 – 12:00(ish) in the Pavilion Gardens Café.

Come along and talk about the u3a, the state of the nation, put the world to rights, talk about life, the universe and everything…or just have a chat with like-minded people.

Write Your Own Story

Viv Doyle is leading a new group for members who want to write their own story. Do you want to write your autobiography for fun or for friends and family? Maybe you’ve got an eye on publishing it. This might be the group for you.

Viv has written professionally for over 40 years and has many hints and tips to pass on.

The group will meet on third Friday of each month from 2pm – 4pm at Viv’s house. You can contact her via the Groups page on the website.

The Pirates of Penzance

As you may remember, we are organising a u3a group outing to see The Pirates of Penzance at the Buxton Opera House on Sunday 28th July as part of the Gilbert and Sullivan Festival.

Last year’s trip to see The Yeomen of the Guard was a huge success and we hope to exceed the 93 tickets we sold last summer. The discounted price for u3a members is £30.00 which represents a great saving on the normal price of £37.00.

The ticket also includes a free pre-performance talk for u3a members (normal price £8.50). Many, many thanks to Philip Barton for organising this on our behalf.

Please register your interest by emailing Philip by clicking this link Philip Barton with your name, email address, u3a membership number, phone number and how many tickets you require. Alternatively, you can text or leave a message on 07980660202 or 01298214571. Details of how to pay will be available in early March.
