Happy New Year to everyone in Buxton and District u3a…let’s hope the year is one where we can learn, laugh and live doing all the things we love. And maybe this is the year where we all try something new.
Before we look at what’s coming up this year, let’s have a quick look back at the last big event of 2023, our Xmas Party.
Xmas Party December 2023
If you went to the Xmas party, I’m sure you’ll agree that it was a wonderful event. The Palace Hotel did us proud, this year. The room where we held it looked a picture. They have obviously spent a lot of time, effort (and money) on upgrading their facilities and we were rewarded with a beautiful setting for our party.
I want to offer a big, heartfelt ‘thank you’ to both the Singing For Fun group and the Ukulele group (pictured) for their highly entertaining sets of classic singalong tunes for the festive period. They really set the tone for the afternoon. A big ‘thank you’ also goes to Martin Baxter who gave us an elegant, yet fiendishly difficult quiz to have a go at. I’ve put the quiz and the answers at the end of this Bulletin, so you can see how well, (or how badly!) you did.
Thanks everyone. We really appreciated all the hard work that went into making our Xmas party such an enjoyable afternoon.

Upcoming events in January for your diary
General meeting Monday 8th January
Our first general meeting of the year takes place in the Buxton Methodist Church Hall. Please arrive early for a 10:00am start.
Roland York will be talking to us about the pleasures and peril of long-distance cycle touring and the adventures to be had along the way. To help illustrate his talk and to show us how it’s done, Roland will bring in his much loved, heavily laden bike.
Coffee and Chat : Friday 12th January
Our regular Coffee and Chat session returns to The Pavilion Gardens Café on Friday 12th January from 10:30 to 12:00.
Come along and chat about the u3a, the world, life the universe and everything. All welcome – including non-members.
The first meeting of the Archaeology group is on Monday 15th January at the Buxton Methodist Hall, starting at 10:00am.
The early indications are that this will be a very popular group, so please don’t miss out. Contact June Baxter if you want to join the group.
Looking further ahead
Plans are well advanced in organising a u3a group outing to see The Pirates of Penzance at the Buxton Opera House on Sunday 28th July as part of the Gilbert and Sullivan Festival.
Last year’s trip to see The Yeomen of the Guard was a huge success and we hope to exceed the 93 tickets we sold last summer. The discounted price for u3a members is £30.00 which represents a great saving on the normal price of £37.00. U3A members can also book on a pre-performance talk (normal price £8.50) for free. Many, many thanks to Philip Barton for organising this on our behalf.
Please register your interest by emailing Philip using this link Philip Barton to send him your name, email address, u3a membership number, phone number and how many tickets you require. Alternatively, you can text or leave a message on 07980660202 or 01298214571. Details of how to pay will be available in early March.
Here are the questions and answers to Martin Baxter’s Xmas quiz
Wishing you all a very happy new year. May you laugh, learn and live with a full and constructive year with Buxton and District u3a.
