We will continue to meet on the third Thursday of the month during the year. The Ancient Greek word philosophia was probably coined by Pythagoras and literally means "love of wisdom" or "friend of wisdom". In casual speech, the term can refer to any of the most basic beliefs, concepts, and attitudes of an individual or group.

The monthly meetings generally follow the pattern of having one of the members introduce a topic followed by a general discussion. We try to avoid the sort of arguing which some will remember from High School debates, the aim is to understand each other rather than agree. Members are welcome to come along and just listen if they wish, there is no pressure to speak. None of the current group members are professional philosophers. in the past our meetings have covered topics which all have relevance to the present day and include political philosophy, "designer" babies and the relationship between science and religion. It's a surprisingly stimulating and cheering activity. Normally members get an email before the meeting explaining what the subject will be and usually quoting some sources of information.
